All About Vape Coils

Vaping has become incredibly popular but the components and terminology involved can be a bit confusing for those who are just getting started. There are a multitude of different types of vape devices, a huge variety of e-liquids to choose from, and a very important component called a “coil”.

Each part of the vape plays a role in providing you with delicious clouds of soothing vapor, but the most impactful part of any vape is the coil. These are the heart and soul of your device and can make a big difference in the flavor you experience as well as the richness of every puff. Whether you want to increase the size of your clouds or enhance the flavor of your favorite vape juice, the coil can help.

In this article we’re going to take a deep dive into the wonderful world of vape coils and tell you everything you need to know. We’ll take a look at what coils are, help you gain a better understanding of the different types, and even provide some pointers on how to find the best. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or just getting started, this article will help you better understand coils so you can make informed decisions regarding your future purchases and overall vaping experience.

What Are Vape Coils?

Put simply, vape coils are the part of your device turn eliquid into vapor, but there is a lot more to them than that. Coils are carefully designed to be highly efficient with a small amount of energy. The coil in your vape utilizes energy from the battery to rapidly heat ejuice and turn it from a liquid form to a vapor.

There are a bunch of different types of coils out there, so this isn’t a “one size fits all” situation. Not only will your device require a specific size and type of coil, but within those specifications you can choose from a multitude of different coils that offer their own unique set of advantages.

3 Common Types of Coils

There is nothing more disappointing than getting a fresh pack of coils in the mail just to realize that they don’t provide the experience you’d hoped for. Fortunately, this situation can be avoided with a minimal amount of effort and understanding. Let’s take a look at the three most common types of coils and what unique advantages they provide.

  • Stainless Steel

First on our list is the most common type of coil on the market. Stainless steel coils have been around since the beginning and have paved the way for every other coil out there. That being said, stainless steel vape coils are not at all obsolete. These are still one of the most popular types of coils because they are durable, resistant to high temperature, and are great at atomizing ejuice. If you’re looking for a coil that’s reliable and going to last a long time, you should definitely check out some stainless steel coils.

  • Ceramic

Ceramic coils are right behind stainless steel in regards to popularity. These coils are made of porous ceramic and are a bit more fragile, but have a reputation for enhancing flavor. They also work exceedingly well at high wattages. While these are slightly more expensive and don’t last quite as long as stainless steel coils, many vape enthusiasts prefer ceramic coils and believe they are worth the investment.

  • Kanthal

Kanthal coils are probably the most sophisticated coil available. These are made with a combination of iron, aluminum, and chromium. The materials used in this coil allow it to heat up very quickly which means you can expect huge clouds of vapor. Many professional vapers utilize Kanthal coils for competitions. If you want a vape coil that provides huge clouds and boasts a minimal heat up time, Kanthal might be the perfect fit.

Understanding Ohms

There is a lot of terminology involved in vaping and some of it is down-right scientific. You may remember hearing about Ohms in your physics class, but like so many things we learn in school, its definition probably went as fast as it came. It is important for vapers to know what ohms are but luckily we only need a simple understanding.

Ohms are a unit of measurement used to define the level of resistance between two points of a coil (or any conductor). The higher the ohms, the greater the level of resistance. When a high resistance coil is used with a low voltage, the current is lower. This means smaller, but more flavorful clouds. It also means your battery will last longer. When you use a low resistance coil with a higher voltage, your battery won't last as long, but you'll get to enjoy huge, satisfying clouds.

Using an Appropriate Eliquid and Coil Combination

Just like coils, not all e-liquids are the same. Two of the most common types of e liquids are nic salts and e-juice. While these look the same, they are quite different. Nic salt contains a much higher concentration of nicotine that can range from 20mg to 50mg and require a coil with higher resistance.

Ejuices have a lower level of nicotine that typically ranges from 2mg to 12mg. Unlike salt nic, ejuice can be adequately atomized with sub-ohm coils as well as higher resistance coils. With vape juice, the type of coil you use really comes down to your device's specifications and your own personal preference.

Vape Coil Maintenance

The duration of time that your vape coil lasts is primarily dependent on your own vaping habits. Coils can last anywhere from two days to two months. If you vape daily, you can expect to change your vape coil every two weeks or so. You’ll know it’s time to change your coil when you start to taste cotton or your puffs feel harsher than they normally do. Changing out your vape coil is incredibly easy and we recommend doing it preemptively to avoid any unsavory experiences. To change your coil, simply follow the directions provided with your device. All devices are different, but in general, you need to empty the ejuice from your vape tank, remove the old coil, put the new one in, refill your vape tank, and let it soak into the coil for about 30 seconds. Vape Coils are easy to change, simple to maintain, and an essential part of vaping.
