What Is E-Liquid? A Simple Breakdown of What’s Inside Your Vape

The name eLiquid comes directly from the product itself: e-liquid. I'm sure you knew at least that much. But that raises a pretty important question—what exactly is e-liquid, and what is actually being inhaled when a vape device is used? 

Understanding what goes into vape juice helps make sense of how vaping works at a basic level, especially since it is the core substance powering nearly all electronic cigarettes and vaping devices.

At its simplest, e-liquid (also called vape juice or e-juice) is the fluid that is heated inside a vaping device to create an inhalable vapor.

When the device is activated, a battery powers a coil that heats the liquid just enough to turn it into an aerosol. That aerosol is what users inhale. Even though it looks like smoke, it is technically vapor created from heated liquid rather than combustion.

The second ingredient is vegetable glycerin, commonly referred to as VG. Unlike PG, VG is thicker and slightly sweet. Its main role is vapor production. The dense, cloudy exhale seen in many vape setups comes primarily from VG. It also softens the inhale, making the overall experience feel smoother.

Flavorings are the third major component. These are food-grade additives that create the wide variety of vape flavors available today.

Everything from fruit blends and menthol profiles to dessert-style and beverage-inspired flavors comes from these ingredients. Even though the flavors are complex, they are typically built from combinations of standard flavor compounds used in food products.

The final optional ingredient is nicotine. Not all e-liquids contain it, but many do. Nicotine is included to satisfy cravings for users who are transitioning away from traditional tobacco products or who prefer a nicotine-containing vape experience. The amount of nicotine can vary significantly depending on the product and user preference.

How E-Liquid Becomes Vapor

The transformation from liquid to vapor happens inside the vape device. When the user activates the device, either by pressing a button or simply inhaling (depending on the model), the battery sends power to a coil. That coil heats up quickly and transfers heat to a wick soaked in e-liquid.

Once heated, the liquid does not burn. Instead, it turns into a fine aerosol made of tiny droplets suspended in air. This is what is inhaled and exhaled as vapor. The process is designed to avoid combustion, which is what separates vaping from traditional smoking methods.
